Data Bending

Title
Data Bending UDIST-300-03
01/19/2011-05/04/2011 Studio Monday, Wednesday 07:15PM - 10:15PM, Founder's Hall, Room 304
Data is everywhere. From the decoding of DNA to the cataloguing of space debris, raw data is being generated at unprecedented rates. What's more, this data is now accessible to the public through sites such as data.gov and is engaged by such design groups as stamen.com and artists Aaron Koblin and Scott Snibbe. This class will explore ways to organize and present different sets of data in a variety of visual forms. This class will use Processing. This open source programing language will be used to create data visualizations. It can then be used to create dynamic compositions using images, movies, text and graphic elements. Students will have a choice to either create linear projects that convey information in a comprehensible way or they can choose to use a non-linear approach that uses data to create behaviors or patterns that speak to the ineffable it. Students will also have the choice to present their work as a live web page or as an interactive installation in the Interface show.Readings and research projects ranging from computer science to aesthetic treaties will provide a diverse theoretical framework.

I have invited Michael Shiloh to this discussion that he may be implicated in the Data Bending syllabus. While he lacks my sarcastic spiteful bile, he could be a viable candidate for picking up my slack. If it provides no aid to our efforts and we can not put him to work in the trenches, at the minimum, we might siphon off some of his enthusiasm.

Thanks to North for having invited me, I'm here. Although my sarcasm will fail to reach the level of North's, I will do my best.

Since you mention Pachube, do you have Ethernet shields? What other communication shields do you have (Wifi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, etc.?)

On the main page it was suggested that North provide some of the math lectures. What math did you have in mind?

Hi Michael,
The math referred to is just my presentation of trigonometric tricks. Mostly pertinent to things like video tracking, sensor smoothing and spacial mapping. Things like: given point x1,y1 what is the distance to x2,y2 ? or: how many Phi in a cake?

I'm pretty confident I can handle the math but will want to make a checklist with you to make sure I cover what you feel is relevant.
